A Prayer for Those Who Want to Help

Restrain us, O Most Holy One,
from presuming
what others should think
or feel,
or what they should do.

Give us the wisdom
to hear their words,
have compassion for their hurts,
and understanding of their needs.

Let our hearts be filled with Your love —
as the honeycomb is filled with sweetness,
and let our lives reflect Your glory —
as fine gold reflects the sunlight.

Hereby is Your servant warned:
refrain from being pushy or presumptuous.
If we are gentle, patient, and generous,
we will not do wrong.

Let my words
and my works
and my desire
be in keeping with Your will,
O Ground of my being and Fount of my joy.
