Sing a New Song

Sing to God —
sing a new song;
a song of joy,
of gratitude;
a song of trust
in changes
both large and small;

and you will hear
all the earth is singing;
the ever-new
and age-old song
of endings
and beginnings;

Winter’s cold leavings:
dead branches and broken twigs
by Spring’s light redeemed;
a feather-lined shelter
filled with potential:
a wordless shout
of faith in tomorrow;

the nest is empty,
the shells shattered,
the fledglings flown
on unsteady wings
to sing ancient hymns
in the gray-green limbs
of the venerable oak tree;

death and birth
repose and renewal,
and transformations;
waves rise and fall,
sand is scattered,
the ocean remains;

sunset and moonrise,
bright noon and darkness
dusk and dawn;
endings and beginnings
each at its right time,
and all connected
to the rest.

Sing to God —
join in the heavenly song;
a song of joy,
of wonder and delight;
a song of faith and trust
in changes
both large and small.
