Shall We Dance?

Shall We Dance?

I don’t know
if I can dance
right now
in the middle
of our mourning;

I don’t know
if I can stand:
my legs are too weak
and my heart
is too heavy;

I don’t know
if I can look
at a dance floor
so like that one
stained with martyrs’ blood;

I don’t know
if I can listen
to cheerful music
amid the sounds
of cries and weeping;

I don’t know
if I can feel
anything —
after so much horror
and so much hate;

I don’t know
if I can dance,
but I can remember
the smiling,
innocent faces;

I can remember
their twinkling eyes,
and tender smiles,
the signs of pride
and hints of mischief;

I can come to know
those beautiful souls
as I hear their stories
as told by loved ones:
reclaiming joy amid the tears;

I can look beyond
yesterday and today
to a tomorrow
where fear has vanished
and prejudice has died;

I can envision
love’s floodgates opening,
delight abounding,
compassion
running wild;

I can imagine
and dare
to believe
in a time beyond
this present pain;

I can see a world,
uncategorized
and free,
where life is celebrated —
in all its grand diversity

It has begun already,
formed heart by heart
and I believe
that it can start
with me;

By God, yes:
I will dance!
