For the Beauty of the Earth

Psalm 8 ~ reimagined by Deborah

O joyful, majestic, inspiring Spirit, Your glory shines forth over all the earth. In the sparkling sea, on the bright snowy peaks, in the green valleys and the white-sanded deserts; in the wildflowers that flow across hillsides, the deer that dance in the shadows, and the salmon that splash in the streams.

Jays whistle and shout, frogs jump for joy, trees tremble and wave as the beauteous parade passes by.

While we, like blind moles, stumble along, unseeing, unthinking, absorbed in ourselves.

Then, in an instant, Your light strikes us: colors are  suddenly brighter, the air fragrant, the breeze enlivening, the sounds delightful, the ground beneath our feet filled with sacred power and we know — for an instant, we know — that You are here; that we live amidst a divine realm.

Suddenly we are deeply, truly, vividly aware and in awe. And we are filled with wonder; we marvel at All That Is, and we are curious: why have we been brought here; why are we so blessed — and often so blind?

No ancient king or medieval prince enjoyed riches greater than these: the shining stars, the playful moon, the radiant sun, our abundant, precious earth; birds and bees, lizards and llamas, cats and coyotes, roses and robins, dogs and dolphins and dandelions…

You have placed us in the midst of glories beyond compare. We are blessed beyond all telling.

Joyful, majestic, inspiring Spirit, Your glory shines forth over all the earth.
