The Night Watch

Message received:
1:37 a.m., 2:12, 3:48…
unmistakable traces
of another darkling vigil;
the unsettled watch
of the insomniac,

the unknowing,
unwilling
guardian
of the night.

Hearing
in the fulsome silence,
the flutter
of bird wings,
tree branches,
and heartbeats

far and near;

sensing
struggles in the darkness,
of birth
of death
delight
despair
and violence;

knowing
the limitless depths
of fear
anger
resentment
grief
renewal
hope
and faith

present and past;

praying
words that have no sound
for health
and peace
and joy
and release
for all that lives

the whole world ’round;

awake
as others sleep,
keeping a lonely watch
in the company of thousands:
the restless,
quiet sentinels
who bless us all
as they wait
for the morning.

I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.  ~ Psalm 130:6
