Silence (Remembrance Day)

Silence

Shhhh. Let there be silence.
Silence, only for a moment.
As we remember.

Let there be silence
as we listen
for a sound from far away.

A faint cry
a call
a shout:
scramble!
incoming!
I’m hit!
medic!
hold on!
hold on!
hold on!

Shhhhh. Let us listen.
Listen, only for a moment.

A distant trumpet
marching feet
ready, aim, fire!
hushed voices
muffled sobs
not yet!
not yet!
not yet!

Shhhhh. Let there be silence.

Silence
Silence, only for a moment
for what we have not seen,
do not know,
cannot imagine,
will never understand.

Silence
Silence, only for a moment
for the lives lost,
the bodies damaged,
the minds destroyed,
the hopes shattered,
the hearts broken.

Shhhh. Let there be silence.

Silence
Silence, only for a moment
for those
we have abandoned,
ignored,
abused,
avoided,
institutionalized,
and
forgotten.

Silence
Silence, only for a moment
for the promises
repeatedly
broken:
It is over.
Never again.
The last war.
Peace in our time.

Shhhh. Let there be silence.
