As an Owl

As an owl
longs for the sheltering oak,
a blessed sanctuary
from every danger and foe;
so my soul longs for you,
O Gracious One;

as an owl
takes comfort
in the night’s soft cloak,
so my soul
takes comfort in you,
O God.

as an owl
hears the heartbeat of a mouse
in a nightdark field,
so my soul listens
for Your living word to me,
O Beloved.

As an owl
blinks in the noonday sun,
so is Your radiance to me;
utterly awe-inspiring,
beyond all describing,
O Source of All that Is.

As an owl
hoots for its mate,
so I call out to You,
an evensong hymn
for Your ears alone;
a rhapsody of love.
