A Prayer for Protection

O strong and fearless Shepherd, come to the aid of your frightened flock! Those wolves you warned us about have drawn near; we can feel their hot breath on our necks and hear their growling in our ears. We are scattered and rattled, bleating insensibly in the night.

Radiant One, bring your light to our darkness. Powerful Lord, flex Your muscles, show Your strength, and lend us a hand! Loving Shepherd, use your crook to pull us to safety and knock the stuffings out of those who prey upon us!

It may sound aggressive and unkind, my Lord; asking You to kick some lupine behind. Yet there are times when that’s just what we need: the blessed assurance that we’re not in this alone.

And our yearning won’t surprise You, since You’ve been right here where we are, and know just how it feels.

Worry can chew at our hearts, doubt can lead us astray, fear can sink our spirits, sadness can darken even the brightest day.

Let Your radiant light shine upon us, holy Redeemer; illuminate our understanding, enliven our courage, lift up our spirits on wings like eagles’.

Remind us that we are Yours – utterly, eternally, and that together there is nothing we cannot do.

Amen.
