O sing to the Lord a new song. ~ Psalm 98

Oh Lord, if only we could sing
a new song,
a joyful song
with fine, uplifting words!

But all of America
is mourning.

We cannot look
at smiling children
without seeing
tiny coffins;

we cannot hear
the sound of laughter
without imagining
grieving families.

Christmas lights
and cheerful carols
seem out of place –
almost obscene.

How can we be celebrating
when other parents
have just buried
their dearest hopes and dreams?

All of America
is in mourning,

the air is chilled
with regrets,
and despair;

we’ve given up,
it’s been decided:
the world is lost
there’s nothing we can do.

The holly leaves
are dry and sharp as claws,
the berries all have fallen
from the mistletoe;

our hearts ache,
we shiver helplessly
before the heat
of the blazing Yuletide fire;

for all of America
is mourning.

Bright flames flicker,
jump and dance;
a fiery version
of hide and seek;

a shower of sparks,
warm and glowing:
appears for an instant,
and then is gone.

Each a faithful servant:
a tiny torchbearer
contributing all it has
to the fire’s life

that it might shine
that the light
might never go out.

Let all of America

Lord God,
our new song
cannot be of joy,
but of unremitting faith:

all is not lost,
evil has not won,
love is everlasting;
the Light will never go out.

    I am thinking of you and holding you in Love and Prayer. I will be attending a special Mass for the Holy Innocents tomorrow evening. These words of yours will be in my heart.
    With Love, Deep Peace, and Every Blessing to you and yours…
