Fully Known

Holy Beloved, nothing is hidden from You
you have studied me
and learned all about me,
inside and out.

You know which chair I’ll choose,
and what time I want to leave,
You know when I toss and turn
and when I rest in dreamless sleep.

You understand my thinking, and know
what will delight or disturb me,
what will excite my outrage
or inspire my admiration.

You watch the road I travel,
anticipate the steps I’ll take,
and know which twists and turns
will distract and delay me.

You are familiar
with my habits and routines,
all my preferences and predilections
are known to You.

While my ideas and opinions
are still taking shape,
before my mouth has opened,
You know what I will say.
    ~ Psalm 139:1-4

And yet, O Gracious Light,
despite knowing all about me,
each flaw and failure, through and through,
Your love remains unchanged.

I have been made worthy —
not due to any merit
for of that I have none! —
by that pure and perfect love.

What a glorious creation,
this redeeming, all-encompassing love,
let me learn to give it, O my Lord,
as abundantly as I’ve received.
