Psalm 18: I Love You, My Salvation

I love You,
my Source of Strength,
my Sanctuary,
my Fortress,
my Garden.

My God,
my armor, my shield,
my shout of triumph
and soft whisper of assurance;
there are not words enough
nor time enough
to praise You as You deserve.

I call to You
to set me free
and save me
from harm.

Fear swept over me
and I stumbled,
entangled
in bleak shadows
and sinister threats.
My cries
died
in my throat,
strangled
by unseen terrors.

An icy mist
enshrouded
my soul
and I slipped
into the
eternal blackness.

A spark,
an ember,
growing
ever brighter
illuminated
the night;
a flash
as my spirit
ignited –

a wild raging fire
came down from heaven;
burning coals
fell from the sky
and set the earth aflame.

The sky split open
God’s radiance
descended
on raven-winged clouds,
escorted
by swirling seraphim.

The Most High
thundered from heaven;
God raised his battle cry,
sending forth
legions of angels
bearing blazing coals
and lightning bolts –
striking the earth
all around me.

And I saw the world
in all its grandeur,
its mysteries unveiled;
submerged
in ocean currents,
atop mountainsides
bristling with pines,
deep in valleys
covered with blooms;

I ran beside
the graceful eland,
sang lovesongs
with the gentle dove,
and burrowed
with the mole;

I roared with the lion,
and frolicked with the lambs,
I climbed trees
with koalas,
and howled
in concert
with the wolves.

I struggled with the salmon
against the mighty stream,
and slithered along
the desert floor
with serpents
great and small.

I flew with the owls
and splashed
with the otters,
I grazed
with the deer,
and screamed
with the eagles,
and shouted out loud
for joy.

God reached out
and touched me;
my Savior
drew me
out of the depths –
and set me on a high place;
I no longer believe,
but now I know:
and my soul
is aglow
with awe
and gratitude.
