Saying No to Fear

Fear God!
thunders the prophet –
and the people
cringe and cover their faces;

Fear God!
shouts the preacher –
and the people
tremble and lower their eyes,

Fear God!
demands the zealot –
and the people
shake their heads
and walk away.

Fear?
Fear the One
who gave us life,
and designed
our glorious world?

Fear
makes us flee;
it sets our teeth on edge,
makes our blood run cold
and turns our hearts to stone.

Fear
is the source
of every evil,
fueling anger, self-loathing,
greed, and revenge,
It diminishes our reason,
destroys our happiness,
all good fellowship,
and any hope
of rebuilding.

Fear
is not from God –
but clearly
originates
Elsewhere.

God’s majesty
is awesome –
not awful;
a breathtaking joy
to be pursued
ardently,
desired
deeply
and delighted in
passionately.

Fear chases us away –

Love draws us closer,
calming us,
comforting us,
encouraging our spirits
and infusing our souls with joy.

Love opens our hearts,
and eases our minds,
bringing light,
laughter,
and true wisdom
into our lives
and our world.

Love God!
