Jesus Christ on a Pogo Stick

Jesus Christ on a Pogo Stick

Jesus Christ
on a pogo stick –
blatantly blasphemous,
surely scandalous! –
utterly unbelievable:
an ineffable being,
being so human
as having fun?

Who could imagine
the Crucified Lord
hopping on
a child’s toy,
bouncing with joy
along the street
as giddy
as a little boy,

His hair uplifted
by the breeze,
His face wreathed
in smiles,
the sound
of His laughter
filling the air –
infusing the earth with joy;

A cheerful Christ,
what a notion!
a playful Messiah,
what next?!
A light-hearted
Light of the World
dancing
with divine delight?

But the holy One
is not restricted
by human lack
of imagination;
surely the Source
of all Creation
has every cause
for such celebration.

If we look
with the eyes
of eternity,
ignoring
time’s limiting
perspective,
we will see
with perfect clarity:

that every day
is Easter
and life
and love
are a-bounding ….
just like
Jesus Christ
on a pogo stick.

Rejoice!
