Begat & By Golly

Begat & By Golly

“And he begat….”
sententious sentences;
a ceaseless
senseless series;
a horsefly in your ear.

And I grit my teeth
and think:
Oh yeah?
and who was it
that be-gave?

Who carried the child
within her body
for 9 months,
and within her heart
forever?

Who nourished
and nurtured,
cooled the fevers,
soothed the hurts
and calmed the fears?

Who kept
the long-night vigils
without complaint
in sickness
and in health?

Who changed
the dirty diapers,
who did the washing,
who mended, patched
and sewed?

Who listened
to his complaints
and heard his prayers,
who kissed
away the tears?

Methuselah, Hezekiah, Jeroboam and Jehosaphat….
names of mere begatters;
the ones who mattered
were known
as “mom.”
