Seriously

This is a very personal reflection; my candid feelings about Worship as Entertainment – a subject which I take very Seriously.

SERIOUSLY

Playtime
for grownups
is seriously fun –
as long as
it is just for fun
and not for faith
or hope
or healing.

Billowing
chiffon scarves
and purple leotards
are pretty …
and
pretty meaningless
when someone
is troubled,
hurting,
sick,
or sad.

Mimes
and clowns
and stilt-walkers
have their place –
in parades,
at parties,
and Mardi Gras,

there,
where the Lord
is Confusion
and
Chaos is king
they amuse
and entertain.

It’s all an act.
Seriously.

Where we seek
the saving word
and blessed grace
of God
they only serve
to distress,
distract,
and offend

dismissing
our spiritual struggles
with a forced,
false-keyed
levity;
depicting
our seeking-after
the Holy Center of life
as a three-ring circus.

It’s all in good fun.
Seriously.

Helium balloons
and magic tricks
sparklers
and confetti;
carefully orchestrated
strictly controlled
spontaneity –
we aim to entertain.

This is worship.
Seriously?

While in the back
a woman weeps
silently,
a sickly infant
in her arms;

next to the aisle
a father of two
recites
the combination
to the safe
where he keeps
his revolver;

in the third pew
a grandmother
is facing
the foreclosure
of the home
where she raised
her family;

and to her left
a soldier
home on leave
fights
the urge to scream;

across the aisle
a middle-aged man
has decided against
another round
of chemotherapy,

his weary,
grieving wife
glances over
tenderly,
he gives her hand
a reassuring squeeze

just then
the congregation
bursts
into gales
of laughter

Here we don’t take things too
seriously.

and the young man
sitting near the door
shakes his head
in disbelief;
why
would anyone come
here
when the show
is so much better
at the cineplex?

You can’t take any of this
seriously.
