Ancient Fragments

Ancient Fragments

The traveler pauses
and squinting
unable to interpret
the ancient script,
darkly mysterious
in the bright dawn.

of geologic
the guide
filled with
educated certainty
airily assures;
that cooled
and left
its mark.

Here lies
a few
broken bits
of the planet’s
vast history
etched in stone;
written in a language
only scientists
can read.

The traveler nods
and turns away
a sunward squint
disguising a frown.

They were
on holy ground
by shards
of ancient tablets,

of divine missives
in plain sight;
See, I have loved you
from the
of the world.
