A Pebble on the Path

A Pebble on the Path

A pebble
on the path
broken off
in ages past
apart from
a larger stone.

Was it a sudden shattering
or a gradual split?
Did the changing seasons
push it slowly apart,
an outside influence
insinuate itself
into the solid form,
was it the steady drip
of melting snow,
or the force
of an endlessly
rushing stream?

On its own
for eons,
sharp edges
worn away;
and cool
and silent –
all traces of
its former self

No evidence
to link it
to the whole
of which
it is still
a part.

The stones cry out
for a reunion
that will never come.

A far flung
of individuals
each carrying
the ancient message:
once upon a time
we all were one.
