The Landing

The Landing

Descending
through the clouds
bouncing
across the currents
flashes
of sunlight
waves
of stormy gray
stony silence
two hundred souls
listening
praying
cringing
at each
rattling shake
a sudden drop
a collective gasp
a glimpse of the runway
a brief thud
the howl
of reversing engines
tires smoke
wheels turn
blinking
the passengers
return to their bodies
breathing again
laughing
reaching
for cell phones
carry-ons
and coats
forgetting
their fear.
