John the Baptist

John the Baptist

Wading into the water
ceaselessly
hunched over
under the weight
of a thousand
thousand sins
fingers wrinkled
like a washerwoman
toes stained
by riverbank mud;

a bird
foreign
unexpected
a stranger
to the wetlands
envisioned
but unseen
radiant
as pure as light;

a
sign
a signal
the wait is over
the kingdom of God
has alighted
upon
our world.
