Like Manna

Like Manna from Heaven

Almighty God,
Creator of heaven and earth,
the Scriptures tell us
of your acts of power;
the miracles You brought forth
as Your chosen people
made their way
to the Promised Land.

You freed them
from slavery,
led them
to safety,
and sustained them
with sweet nourishment
and clear fresh water.

But Your love
did not stop there –
nor is that
where it began:
it stretches forth,
throughout space and time;
to the ends of the earth,
and the farthest reaches
of the cosmos.

You enwrap our planet
in beauty,
and fill our lives
with gentle joys;
You speak to us
whoever we are —
to the good
and the bad
alike —
the message
always the same:
“I long for you,
o My children!”

Your Word cannot be silenced;
those with ears will hear it
wherever we are:
above the roar of traffic,
and the slogan-shouting crowds;
beneath the stillness
of a forest glade,
or inside prison walls.

That sweet Message
sustains us
and nourishes
our souls
as if we have dined
at an extravagant
wedding banquet

and spent the afternoon
and evening
and dancing
with delight.
