Eternity One Afternoon

Eternity One Afternoon

Waiting
and waiting
and waiting;
alone
among silent strangers
staring
into unread magazines,
surreptitiously
glancing up
at the ashen-faced clock
too frightened
to move –
or perhaps
it, too, is
under the same
fiendish spell
that holds
the chill air
motionless.

Petal pink carpeting,
padded chairs covered
in pastel floral fabrics,
a strain of soft music,
the scent of roses,
but we will not
be fooled;
we know
our fearful destiny.

Eternity
stretches out
before me
as her terrible words
reach my trembling ears,
the receptionist
at my dentist’s office
announces:
“The doctor is running
a little late this afternoon.”
