Thank You for the Flower

Thank you for the flower
that you set outside my door;
it was such a nice surprise
to receive a gift just for me –
for no particular reason
except to bring a smile.
that you set outside my door;
it was such a nice surprise
to receive a gift just for me –
for no particular reason
except to bring a smile.
In a day or two
or maybe three –
it will wilt;
the petals
will drop
to the earth
and fade away.
And from its heart
will come forth
a message:
a sign
of life-giving hope
and renewal;
born anew
from the
empty place
once wreathed
in velvety yellow.
A thousand
tiny seeds
awaiting
their moment;
ready
to burst forth,
filling the air
with their
gentle testimony
that once,
upon this site,
there was
a lovely
yellow flower.
And all
who have eyes
will see
and rejoice
to know
that here –
right outside my doorstep –
you thought of me.
Thank you,
dearly beloved,
thoughtful Friend,
for the flower.
