The Devil

The Devil

“If there were no Devil,
it would have been necessary
to invent him.”
~ not exactly what Voltaire said.

The cause of all
our trip-ups and troubles,
the source of every temptation;

the one who lays the traps,
and baits the hooks,
and leads us into sin.

Malicious and hate-filled,
taking delight
in the plight of humankind,

demeaning the poor and the ill,
sneering at the old and the weak,
he cares only for himself.

The one we can blame
for all suffering and distress:
an evildoer we love to hate.

It is a sign of our good character
that we so earnestly refute
and despise that dirty Devil.

The Loathsome Villain
and Grand Tormenter
who delights in wickedness

has earned our contempt
and condemnation,
and deserves to be reviled.

While we glower and sneer
at this invisible fiend
with fierce determination

we never need seek the cause
of our faults and failings:
the author of our sins;

a being quite real,
very near,
with an easily recognized face.
