Dedicated to Star

The river rose,
the current grew stronger;
she watched in terror
as trees were uprooted
and suddenly swept away;
the falls thundered,
the sky broke
into fragments
and reflected
shards of sunlight.

Higher still;
the floodline reached,
the banks breached,
her eyes damp,
her heart trembling;
the time
had come at last.

The swirling water
touched her skin
with a hundred
glistening rainbows.

Half-forgotten promises
filled her mind
and buoyed her spirit;
with a wiggle of delight
and a flip of her tail
she plunged in.

She had remembered
that she
was a fish.
