A one-time only event….

and divorces;

we’re specialists
in splintering,
precious Lord:

breaking away
from each other –
and from You.

You preached
and compassion,
and taught us
to look out
for one another.

These days
we watch out
for one another;
through suspicion
and mistrust:
always on guard
and on the alert
like soldiers
in enemy territory.

The family of humankind?
God’s kingdom, come?
Don’t make me laugh!

What I don’t understand,
dearest Friend,
is why
the Gospel worked so well
when You were here?

Was the world
all that different then?
Was it filled
with sweetness and light,
sugar and spice;
did justice roll down
like a mighty stream
and lollipops
grow on trees?

At the deepest level
it’s what we believe:
times were simpler,
life was less complex,
people were nicer,

That was a special case,
a one-time event
never to be repeated.

And so we rest,
secure in the knowledge
that we can’t do a thing.
