Politics as Usual

Politics as Usual

Angry words and accusations,
sneers and slurs,
denials and deceit;

political debates
on-going across the land.

Entrenched, unmoving;
not willing to listen,
and never to change;

we’re always completely right
and you are utterly wrong.

Nothing is ever resolved,
no agreements reached
no fences mended;

only more hurt feelings
and deeper divisions.

Brother against brother,
families splintered,
houses divided;

opponents despised,
enemies identified.

It’s us against them,
them against us,
and every man for himself;

we’ve learned
to love to hate.

How much can it withstand:
how far apart can we get
before it all collapses?

Will we go out not in a whimper
but a babel of raging voices?
