thoughts on a(nother) stewardship campaign.

This was composed in response to a friend’s comment that her church was having yet another stewardship campaign/ fund drive. I am concerned that many churches have lost their way; they seem more interested in perpetuating the organization than in proclaiming the Word.

Saving Words

I’m sorry.
That’s too bad.
Can I help?
Thank you.
No problem.
I’d be glad to.

More powerful than
all the pious pronouncements,
mission statements,
and advertising slogans:
simple human compassion,
care and concern;

offering help when it is needed,
showing gratitude,
being generous, sympathetic,
and kind,
admitting mistakes,
seeking forgiveness,
trying to make things right.

If these simple words
could be said;
these confessions spoken,
these apologies offered;

if these simple actions
could be done;
these efforts made ..
these kindnesses extended,

churches would not need
membership drives,
stewardship campaigns,
billboards or bumperstickers:

for our lives
would be testimony enough:
proof that God is love
and Christ’s path leads to peace and joy.
