It’s all about God

Inspired by Psalm 29

Ascribe to God, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to God glory and strength.
Ascribe to God the glory of his name;
worship God in holy splendor.

It’s all about God, my friends;
or it’s supposed to be –
if we seek a world at peace,
if we wish for joyful lives,
bounteous harvests,
and a future filled with hope.

If we trust in God’s abundance
no one will hoard or cheat or steal
or try to corner the market
in gold bricks, soybeans,
frozen waffles,
or water.

If we believe in God’s teachings
we will know
when we have enough,
and will share
what we have
with those who do not.

If God alone is King,
presidents, prime ministers,
corporate captains and petty bureaucrats
will cease their striving,
stop shedding blood
and spending money;

cutthroat competition
will be decried;
a pointless, deadly exercise
against the rightful Ruler,
whose word is final:
Our Boss who art in heaven.

If we give glory to God
we can give up
sabotaging others
to sustain our egos,
and celebrate
the wonder of ourselves.

When we realize that all that is
is precious; a sacred gift
from a loving God,
we will treat the earth tenderly:
with thankful hearts
and gentle hands;

we will preserve
each ocean, stream and mountain top;
we will protect every creature
that flies, swims, walks, or crawls;
we will be kind to one another
as if the whole world depended on it.

It’s all about God, my friends;
that’s the way it needs to be –
for peace in our hearts,
peace at home,
peace among nations,
and a future filled with hope.
