What’s Wrong with You?

What’s Wrong with You?

Haven’t you been sleeping?
You don’t look so good;
Do you feel all right?
You look terrible.

Well-meaning questions
and sympathetic remarks
that steadily erode
our sense of well-being.

With the best of intentions,
and genuine concern,
their kindness
makes us sick.

It only takes a few
ill-timed remarks
to make a healthy person
believe that she’s unwell.

It’s human nature
to join in a community
to trust their observations,
and conform to their expectations.

Which means that
we’re easily influenced
by other people’s opinions
even when they’re wrong.

About inklingscommunity

I am a struggling Christian, committed pacifist, near-obsessive recycler, incurable animal lover, inveterate tree-hugger; a nature mystic, a socialized introvert, an advocate for the vulnerable, an opponent of exploiters.
