Dad Was Right

Dad Was Right

or

Another Prediction from the National Weather Service

o o o o

The last time
the people
who
my father always called
“the weather guessers”
predicted rain –
ceaseless,
flood-producing
rain –
we had
a week
of cloudless skies;
the sun
danced
in warm,
uninterrupted splendor
every day.

Last night
they predicted
rain
(again) –
a dreadful storm
with thunder
and chilling
winds.

“One hundred percent”
they asserted.
Then they added:
“chance.”

Though neither
a mathematician
nor a scientist
nor a meterologist
I would have said
one hundred percent
isn’t a chance,
but
a Sure Thing.

This morning
it was overcast
and cold
and …
not
one
drop
of water
has fallen
from the sky.

Dad was right.
