For Our Government and our World

A Prayer for Our Government
and our World

based on Psalm 72

Guide our legislators, O God;
and all those who represent us.

May their decisions be fair,
and their judgments wise.

May the people prosper,
and justice ring out across the land.

May our government protect the poor,
provide for the needy,
and may those who do harm be cast out.

May our nation remain
a land of opportunity and beauty
for as long as the sun shines upon us,
as long as the moon crosses the night sky;
generation through generation.

May our people be like rain,
bringing renewal and restoration
to the earth;

May they be a force for justice,
a source of infinite possibility
and endless creativity.

May care and consideration flourish
and peace abound
among all that lives
until the stars go dark.

May all leaders everywhere
come to honor You,
not merely with their lips
but in all they think and do.

May they remember and obey Your demand
for the protection of the weak,
the feeding of the hungry,
the healing of the sick;

for responsible stewardship of the planet,
and all who dwell upon it;
for justice and equal and fair treatment
independent of fame or riches.

Be merciful to us, o God of righteousness,
and save those in need;
rescue us from oppression and violence,
for all are precious in Your sight.

Amen!
