Greeting the Day

Before the sun has risen,
the birds begin to sing ~
rejoicing in their hope
of the dawn yet to come.

Across the valley
a hound dog barks his wake-up call
so long and loud as to ensure
that all the neighborhood will hear.

Suddenly the sun bursts forth
and the sky is filled with light,
illuminating the earth below,
the good and the bad alike.

At once and with no warning,
the dark shadows disappear,
and foggy specters melt away
revealing all that is.

Flowers lift up their heads,
the bees begin to buzz,
while lizards creep forth
and stretch out upon the rocks.

A solitary cricket
begins to play his tune,
a beetle stumbles across the lawn,
and a butterfly spreads her wings.

The day has come upon us,
bringing warmth,
and life and motion ~
a great awa
kening.

And so it is with God,
Whose Presence lights our way,
Whose grace shines upon us:
the Source of life and light.
