Even in the desert…

Even in the Desert

Even in the desert
life is not in short supply,
but varied and abundant,
if only our eyes are open.

Great beauty dwells
in the wildness,
and a Deep Presence
to be discovered in the desolation.

Free from distractions
we hear not silence,
but murmured birdsongs
and the coyotes’ caroling.

Among the cactus thorns
exquisite flowers bloom,
and the timid owl is sheltered
inside the green and prickly fortress.

Crickets and critters
of marvelous design
scutter across the dusty earth,
leaving no trace behind.

We dare to believe
where we have not seen,
because we’ve seen
what we didn’t believe;

even in the desert,
unseen but present
sensed but not beheld,
Life IS.
