A Call To the God of Power

A Call To the God of Power

inspired by Psalm 10

A Prayer for Deliverance from Enemies

In days gone by, Holy One,
the psalmists celebrated
Your victory over evil-doers.

What about now?

The arrogant and power-mad
were brought low,
and the hungry filled with good things.

What about now?

The greedy and the grasping
laugh as they count their riches,
scoffing at any Divine retribution.

They starve the widow and the orphan,
sneer at the poor, the aged, and the ill,
confident that You will not act.

Liars, cheats, thieves and murders,
dwell in diamond-encrusted luxury,
feasting sumptuously with bloodstained hands.

They sleep serenely on cool silken sheets,
smugly confident of their successes,
certain that no one will call them to account.

We hear of Your acts of power,
when your strong right arm crushed
the Amalekites, Moabites and Philistines.

What about now?

We are beset by enemies
every bit as vindictive and hate-filled
as those You destroyed long ago.

You rose up against the bad guys
who were oppressing Your people,
and kicked them to the curb.

What about now?

Vengeance is Yours,
not ours to take;
that is understood —

why not now?

We need Your help here, O God.
Step in and do something,
for Your people are suffering.

Why not now?

The wicked ignore You,
and laugh at Your demands
for mercy, compassion, and generosity.

They worship money and earthly power,
obeying its command to accumulate;
amassing more and more of everything.

They want for nothing,
confident that they can buy all they need;
sowing death and reaping profits.

“This ‘God’ business is a fantasy,”
they say in their hearts,
for they have no experience of Your justice.

To them You are a fairy-tale
with no basis in fact,
believed in only by children and the foolish.

In the past, Most Powerful One,
You have struck down such evil-doers;
casting them down from their heights.

Why not now?

Rise up, O God, Lord of Creation,
Commander of the Angels,
and rescue your people.

For You see our troubles,
have compassion for our sorrows,
and understand our desperation.

We commit ourselves to You,
Protector of the Weak,
Defender of the Helpless.

Destroy the power of the evil-doers,
seek out and expose all of their plots
until nothing is left.

Pull down their shrines of wealth,
scatter their wretched excesses,
cause their empires to perish utterly.

Holy God, hear our prayers,
and strengthen our faith
that we may live with integrity and hope;

Why not now?
